Mathematics
At Craigmore High School, Mathematics is a core subject from Year 7 to Stage 1, becoming an elective in Stage 2. Students in Years 7 to 10 are evaluated according to the South Australian Curriculum’s Learning Standards, ranging from A to E.
In Mathematics, students enhance their skills across six key areas: number, algebra, measurement, space, statistics, and probability. They also cultivate important qualities, known as dispositions, focusing on resilience, resourcefulness, and reflectiveness.
Our curriculum supports diverse learning needs by offering both extension opportunities and additional support. Teachers tailor their programs to meet the specific needs of their classes and individual students, ensuring appropriate learning experiences for all.
Stage 1 and Stage 2 Mathematics
-
- Stage 1: Divided into Essential Maths, General Maths, Mathematical Methods, and Specialist Mathematics.
- Stage 2: Divided into General Maths, Mathematical Methods, and Specialist Mathematics, with Financial Mathematics available for practical applications.
All Stage 1 students must complete at least one semester of Maths with a C grade or higher. For Stage 2, specific prerequisites are set by the SACE Board:
-
- Mathematical Methods: At least two semesters of pre-mathematical methods in Stage 1.
- Specialist Mathematics: At least three semesters of mathematics, including two semesters of pre-mathematical methods and one semester of pre-specialist mathematics in Stage 1.
- General Mathematics: Two semesters of General Mathematics, or higher, at Stage 1.
Numeracy Intervention Classes
We provide Numeracy Intervention classes for Year 7 and 8 students who need extra support in Maths and Numeracy. Students are identified through primary school recommendations and assessments such as NAPLAN and PAT.
Numicon Approach
Numicon is a multi-sensory approach to teaching mathematics, helping students understand concepts through visual and tactile learning. It uses structured shapes to aid in grasping number relationships, patterns, and arithmetic operations, making abstract ideas more concrete and accessible.
In Numeracy Intervention classes, students follow the South Australian Curriculum at a customised level to ensure progress. These small group classes run across two lines, providing double the time to focus on Maths and Numeracy. Regular assessments allow students to transition out of the program when ready. All teachers are trained in Numicon, ensuring a smooth transition for students moving out of the intervention program.
