Special Options

Special Options Program

Craigmore High School’s Special Options program offers tailored educational pathways designed to meet the diverse needs and interests of students, accommodating up to 48 enrolments. We provide a variety of additional learning opportunities that enhance learning, allowing students to explore their passions and develop new skills.

Innovative Support and Learning

Our innovative programs, such as animal therapy, play a crucial role in supporting emotional regulation and well-being. Through interaction with therapy animals, students experience reduced stress and improved emotional stability, contributing to a nurturing and inclusive school environment.

Modified SACE and Individualised Learning

Students in the Special Options program participate in the Modified South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) through a personalised and supportive approach. Each student has an individualised learning plan outlining their educational goals, strengths, and areas for development. Teachers and support staff work closely with students, adapting teaching methods and materials to suit each student’s learning style, with assessment based on personal progress and achievements. Transition planning assists students in moving smoothly to further education, training, or employment.

Frameworks and Tools

We utilise the Abilities Based Learning and Education Support (ABLES) framework to tailor educational strategies, fostering inclusive learning environments. The “One Plan” is an online personalised learning plan developed collaboratively and regularly updated to reflect the student’s evolving needs and goals.

Water Safety and Sports Programs

Students participate in the Personalised Water Safety Program, designed for students with disabilities. These sessions equip students with essential skills and knowledge to ensure their safety in and around water. Additionally, students actively participate in the Department of Education’s sports program for students with disabilities, which runs 10-15 different sports carnivals across the year.

Numeracy and Literacy Programs

Our educators engage in the Numicon program for numeracy and the Sounds-Write program for literacy. Numicon uses visual and tactile resources to help students understand mathematical concepts, while Sounds-Write focuses on phonics-based literacy, promoting strong foundational skills in reading and spelling.

Communication Tools

We utilise a range of communication tools to support our students’ diverse needs. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods, such as Proloquo2Go and Key Word Signing, enhance communication for students with speech and language challenges, fostering independence and confidence.

Targeted Interventions

Our Tier 2 intervention strategies provide additional support to students who require assistance beyond universal classroom instruction. This includes fine motor skills development and social and emotional learning (SEL) to help students build positive relationships and manage their emotions effectively.

Eligibility and Entry

Please note that entry and eligibility into Special Options are determined externally. We encourage you to speak to your current school to discuss available options.
